Bamboo in Balance: A Linear Kitchen for a Creative Home

In this light-filled extension by Unknown Architects, our Bamboo Linear kitchen fronts brings warmth, structure, and softness to a thoughtful family home and studio. The design is calm and pared back, but full of tactile detail - a quiet backdrop to daily life and creative work.

The clients, founders of the floral art practice Atelier Achter, create abstract floral compositions that feel wild, wondrous, and otherworldly. Their art is a surreal exploration of nature, and the materials used throughout the home play a pivotal role in grounding this fantastical work. Natural, honest materials like our bamboo kitchen fronts added to simple IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets offer a subtle but vital counterpoint to the dreamlike nature of their art, providing a calming foundation for the more whimsical elements within the space.

Our Bamboo Linear fronts were chosen for their warm tone, vertical grain, and sustainable credentials. Bamboo is a fast-growing, regenerative material that locks in carbon and has a simple, timeless beauty of its own. The vertical lines of the bamboo echo the ribs and clean lines of the charred wood extension, creating a cohesive connection between the kitchen and the architectural forms around it. This continuity adds a sense of flow and balance to the space, tying together the natural textures with the structured design.

The extension is simple but striking - clad in charred timber, with carefully placed windows and a generous roof light that floods the space with natural light. The kitchen sits beneath this light well, creating a calm and functional centre to the space, with views out to the garden and beyond.

For homes like this - where design is about balance, not excess - our Bamboo Linear fronts offer a natural, low-impact way to create a kitchen that feels connected, considered, and beautifully easy to live with.
